What is the Vinnies CEO Sleepout?
The Vinnies CEO Sleepout is a one-night event over one of the longest and coldest nights of the year. Over a thousand CEOs, business owners as well as community and government leaders sleep outdoors to support the many Australians who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.
Each CEO Sleepout participant commits to raising thousands of dollars to help Vinnies provide essential services to the people who need them.
It’s just one night, but for the thousands of Australians facing homelessness each and every night, it can change lives.
The 2018 Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Canberra saw CEOs, business and community leaders rally together to raise a record-breaking $629,000. The funds raised from this event:
- Installed two showers at the Thread Together Clothing Hub @ Vinnies. This program provides new and excess clothing from clothing manufacturers and retailers to charities who provide them to vulnerable people doing it tough. This upgrade to the Phillip hub allows people sleeping rough access to a shower, as well as new clothes through fashion retailers.
- Supported the VINES program. Vinnies runs this program in partnership with Scouts ACT, supporting young people at risk by providing a range of activities aimed at positive outcomes such as building new life skills, networking and social and emotional development.
- Continued supporting programs which don’t receive any government funding.
Night Patrol – Night Patrol provides a mobile outreach service for people experiencing homelessness almost every day of the year. Night Patrol vans have been operating in the Canberra region since 2001 and provide essential material items, light refreshments and friendly faces.
Clemente – Clemente is an education program offered by the St Vincent de Paul Society in partnership with the Australian Catholic University. It aims to break the cycle of poverty, inequality and social injustice for disadvantaged and marginalised people by providing access to university-level study.
St Nick’s Young Carers Program – St Nick’s is a respite and recreation program for young carers aged 9-17 years. A young carer is a young person who cares for a family member with a chronic illness, disability, is frail, aged, or has a drug or alcohol dependency. St Nick’s offers young carers the opportunity to take a break from their caring role, learn new skills, make friends and have fun.
The goal for Canberra’s 2019 Vinnies CEO Sleepout is to raise $700,000 to support Canberrans who can’t afford the basics – food, education, utilities and even a place to call home.
Stephen Byron, Managing Director of Capital Airport Group and 61 other CEOs have already signed up for this year’s challenge and will sleep rough on 20 June 2019 at Canberra Airport. Each of these CEOs are seeking donations to help break the devastating cycle of homelessness and help the local community.
